TRY Neuro-Linguistic Programming

An approach that has gained a lot of popularity in recent years is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

In this post, we will explore what NLP is, explain some benefits that it can provide, and give 3 practical tips that you can try.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological methodology that examines the interplay between our thoughts, language, and behaviors. It serves as a practical guide for enhancing our mental processes to result in positive change in our lives. The focus of NLP techniques is to reprogram thoughts and behaviors, leading to personal growth and improved communication skills.

The roots of NLP trace back to the 1970s when Richard Bandler and John Grinder developed the approach. Inspired by renowned therapists such as Milton Erickson and Virginia Satir, Bandler and Grinder sought to understand and emulate the communication and behavioral strategies laid out by these experts. They blended these insights with concepts from linguistics, psychology, and hypnosis, to arrive at NLP as we know it today.

Some benefits of NLP:

  1. Personal Growth: NLP offers techniques and practices that can help you develop self-awareness and challenge limiting beliefs. By identifying and shifting limiting beliefs, individuals can break free from self-imposed limitations and develop a more positive mindset.

  2. Enhanced Communication Skills: NLP emphasizes effective communication by emphasizing the understanding of verbal and non-verbal cues. By mastering techniques such as rapport-building, active listening, and persuasive language, individuals can improve their relationships, professional interactions, and ability to positively influence others

  3. Overcoming Limitations: NLP provides techniques to address and overcome fears, phobias, and unhelpful habits. Through methods such as anchoring, reframing, and visualizations, the idea is that people can rewire their subconscious mind and replace negative behaviors with more empowering ones

Some things to try:

  1. For self-awareness: Create a dedicated time to reflect on your thoughts and/or behaviors. Try to notice any patterns that are not supporting you. Do you have a disempowering reoccurring thought? Are you displaying behavior that is not in line with what you really want? Note these down and see if you can find new more empowering words, or commit to a new make action to replace your old unsupporting habits.

  2. For communication: Experiment with watching for non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. By paying attention to these cues, you can enhance your understanding of others and adapt your communication. For example, instead of offering solutions in a conversation, you notice a person is displaying a need for encouragement and support, which is what you offer instead. This can build rapport, develop deeper relationships, and can even be used as part of your persuasive techniques repertoire (use responsibly!!).

  3. For achieving goals: Once you have created a specific and reasonable target for yourself, such as speaking up in the next meeting, confronting a loved one with some feedback, or completing that long coveted marathon race, create a mental image of yourself completing this goal. Commit to visualizing this image regularly at intervals that suit you - with a note to challenge yourself here, can you manage this daily? If this feels comfortable, try the next step to go deeper and visualize the steps you need to take to achieve the positive outcomes you desire. This process can help align your subconscious mind with your ambitions, increasing motivation and focus.

To present a balanced view, it's important to acknowledge the criticisms surrounding NLP. Some skeptics argue that NLP lacks scientific evidence and express concerns about the consistency and quality of NLP training programs.

It is important to approach NLP with an inquisitive mindset and remember that it is just one tool among many. Take what is relevant and helpful for you, and continue on your personal development journey.
